Caring for adolescents and young adults

Supporting the Psychosocial Challenges of Young Adults Touched by Cancer

Description
This training aims to provide nurses with an in-depth understanding of the psychosocial challenges faced by young adults affected by cancer. It focuses on the need to better support this population throughout their healthcare journey, emphasizing the identification of their unique needs, the implementation of an appropriate care approach, and the application of specific strategies to address their particular requirements.

By the end of this training, nurses will be able to:
1. Identify the unique psychosocial needs of young adults affected by cancer.
2. Explain the importance of providing an adapted care approach to young adults affected by cancer, recognizing the diversity of their experiences.
3. State practical strategies to effectively address the specific needs of young adults affected by hematological cancer and support them throughout their healthcare journey.

The training is divided into three modules:

Module 1: Who are Young Adults Affected by Cancer
This module highlights the diversity of experiences among young adults affected by cancer, with particular emphasis on the challenges unique to their life stage. Understanding the unique characteristics of this population is essential for providing them with tailored support.

Module 2: Psychosocial Issues of Young Adults Affected by Hematological Cancer
This module explores the psychosocial issues faced by young adults affected by hematological cancer. It is based on the Supportive Care Framework by Fitch (2008) to underscore the multiplicity of challenges these young adults face, whether they are psychosocial or spiritual in nature.

Module 3: Accompanying and Supporting a Young Adult Affected by Cancer
This module focuses on the crucial role of nurses in accompanying and supporting young adults affected by cancer. It is based on the findings of a research project conducted in collaboration with the SLLC. This project highlighted the young adults' desire for healthcare professionals, including nurses, to adopt an approach that is tailored to their situation. Practical guidance and suggestions are presented to help nurses adapt their clinical practice and optimally address the unique psychosocial challenges experienced by this population.

Ultimately, this course provides nurses with the opportunity to enhance their practice in order to better address the specific psychosocial challenges faced by young adults affected by cancer, thereby contributing to a higher quality of care and support for this population.
