Caring for survivors

Sexual Health (Unit 7)

Description
Unit 7 - Sexual Health.

This training is presented in collaboration with the Canadian Association of Nurse in Oncology (CANO) and is part of CANO’s manual Adult cancer survivorship: A self-Learning resource for nurses – 2020.

Many cancer survivors will experience some alterations in sexual functioning as part of the cancer journey, most often as a side effect of treatment. It is important for the nurse to recognize that sexual challenges are present at all stages of the disease and to routinely assess for problems and offer assistance where needed. In this presentation, Dr. Anne Katz will talk about the possible alterations in sexuality after a cancer treatment and how the healthcare professionals can facilitate a systematic assessment with the patient and the family.

Learning objectives:
• Recognize the changes in sexuality and sexual functioning that may occur in the experience with cancer: diagnosis, treatment, survival, and palliative care
• Understand the sexual needs of patients and their partners
• Facilitate a systematic assessment with the patient and his family
• Know the management of cancer symptoms and treatment of side effects
• Understand the use of the PILSATI model, the BETTER model, and the 5-step model to promote systematic evaluation
